What to expect?
We have created a unique route that will allow you to see unique and very beautiful places in one day. The trip starts in the lower River Amata and within 2-3 hours you will discover one of the most beautiful stretches of the Amata/Gauja, also known as Gauja Canyon.
The River Amata is a narrow, winding and very beautiful river with several steep sandstone rocks on its banks. This stretch is one of the most beautiful and memorable. The route will be relatively calm and rich with impressive sandstone rocks on both sides of the river. It is followed by a series of spectacular Devonian outcrops, sandstone rocks: Edernieki, Ķūķu (the highest in Latvia), Līņu, Enkura, Spriņģu Rocks.
The Gauja route takes you along Līgatne Crossing, the only ferry in the Baltics that is still in operation and is driven from one side of the river to the other by the force of the current. You can end the route at this point or continue to Sigulda. If you decide to continue, the following is waiting for you: Jumpravu, Katrīna, Glūdu, Launaga, Elpu Sandstone outcrops.
The trip will end in Sigulda, Latvia’s most beloved city, where you will have an unprecedented view of Turaida Castle from the river. Our staff will meet you at the camp site “Dainas” to take you back to your car. If you want to stay for longer, we offer a delicious dinner in our outdoor restaurant “MUNO”.
Be ready!
The Amata is a narrow, winding and in summer also a shallow river. You will therefore have to manoeuvre between rocks, cliffs, trees and shoals. In the shallowest places, you may even have to get out of the boat and wade through the river alongside it. There will also be trees across the river to manoeuvre through. This stretch is suitable for riders who already know how to paddle. Beginners are advised to choose a different route.
When entering the River Gauja, near Ķūķu Rock, there is one of the most spectacular rapids, and it is important to enter it straight downstream. It is possible to overturn when entering laterally there.
We only offer this route on days when the water level in the Amata is above 0.8 m. If the water level is lower on a particular day, we will move the start of the route to Ķūķu Rock.
